Star Wars

Not everybody loves Star Wars which, frankly, surprised us. But most of Hollywood is thrilled with the return of the penultimate sci-fi adventure to the big screen -- in all its revamped glory. We asked celebrities from the worlds of film, literature and music to tell us how the Star Wars universe changed their lives. Many suggested that George Lucas' vision nearly 20 years ago just may be the very reason we all do what we do today.

The opening credits, with John Williams' score killed me.

It was a huge influence on my life. I loved going to the theater and escaping to that degree. I was in a different world, a different galaxy, far, far away. I've got them all on tape and I watch them all the time.
Nicollette Sheridan

I have a French sheepdog that looks like an Ewok.
Peter Hyams, director, 2010, The Relic

Do I have any thoughts about Star Wars? Are you kidding? Star Wars is the film that I think gave the world as well as everybody who was interested in films their first wake-up call. Star Wars took the movie screen and made it so much bigger. George Lucas is as responsible as anybody in the world for making films look and sound better. Anybody who makes films owes him a tremendous gratitude.
Jon Cryer, The Pompatus of Love

I was 12 and I saw it at Loews Astor Plaza. I distinctly remember one amazing moment. It was that first shot of the Imperial battle cruiser looming overhead as it chased the Rebel Blockade Runner. It just said, "Remember that cheesy firecracker rocket ship in Flash Gordon? Remember Godzilla trampling Tonka toys ... Remember 'Get your stinkin' paws off me you damn dirty ape' ... 'Open the bay doors HAL'... Klaatu, Barada, Nikto... War of the Worlds -- Triffids, Morlocks, Martians, Daleks... Those f--king ants from Them! Remember all the things in all the movies that ever scared or entertained or just helped you pass the time."
Tim Roth, Gridlock'd

Star Wars isn't really my cup of tea. The reason I like doing so many independent films is that, when they're good, they remind me of the great films that were being made in America during the early '70s: The French Connection, Five Easy Pieces, Dog Day Afternoon, Taxi Driver, Mean Streets, Deliverance, films like that. Everything changed really when Star Wars came out and this formula was really nailed down -- this formula of how to make money, above all else. I kind of hold Star Wars responsible for that.
Gary Busey

I was about 2 feet off the ground and I realized I'd just seen something I'd never seen before. And I realized this movie is timeless and would last beyond forever, like Touch of Evil, Gone With the Wind and Citizen Kane.
Mark Hamill

It's a thrill. We didn't have a premiere the first time. So better late than never. It's the first time I've seen it in 20 years.
Robert Townsend, director and star of Hollywood Shuffle

George Lucas was able to capture a world in far, far away galaxy. And you believed it. You believed the characters. You believed the lifestyle. Everything. That's what made it special.
Marcus Schenkenberg, male super model

It meant a whole lot to me. I saw it when I was 11 years old and I was so impressed. Of course you get impressed by every movie at that age, but it was amazing for me. I was a little scared of Darth Vader ... I think it was a fabulous movie.
George Wayne, columnist, Vanity Fair, Vogue

Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn about this Star Wars Special Edition. Leave wel l enough alone, George Lucas. This Special Edition is all about greedy Hollywood at its most despicable. Thee comes a time when one must stand up and say no to Hollywood gluttony.
Steven Spielberg

It's an audacious subject. No one ever thought about making a Western in outer space before. I think it will stand up for several hundred years.
Patrick McMullen, Interview photographer

It means that my 9-year-old boy is excited about going to see it. He's seen it on TV, he has all the action figures, but he'd like to see it on the big screen. There are about five other movies I'd like to see first. Woody Allen's movie and Madonna in Evita.
Kristine W, dance diva

What can I say about Star Wars? I always wanted to be as high drama as Princess Leia.
Debbie Loeb, future dance diva

Instead of showing it again, they should remake it into a transvestite musical with me making special appearances flying through the air.
Frank DeCaro, author, A Boy Named Phyllis

I remember going to see it with my best friend at the time, and we liked it so much that we called our mothers and told them we were going to stay and see it again, so we sat through it twice. And then, we were so taken with it, that it inspired us to do our own parade version called "Starch Warts" with Barf Later, Puke Skywalker and Bent Cannoli.
Kenneth Branagh

I love the Star Wars films. I like the combination of really great stories and great characters. I get pissed off with action films that are just blow 'em up, shoot 'em up things. I like the kind of mythic thing about the Star Wars films. I really had a good time with those films. I can't wait for the new versions.
Terry Zwigoff, director, Crumb

They didn't make enough money the first time?
Trey Ellis, author, Home Repairs

Before Star Wars I was obsessed with space and space travel, pined for the day that I might navigate the stars. Then I saw the film and had one of the single most important cinematic experiences of my life. I was 15, and from the end of the opening credits to the beginning of the end credits, I was absolutely, positively living in the virtual reality of George Lucas' world. My dream of space travel had been answered, and in some strange way, that allowed me to pursue my other dreams of writing novels and directing movies.
Gale Ann Hurd, producer, Aliens, The Relic

It came out right after I graduated from college, right before I went to work for [producer] Roger Corman. I was blown away, and it wasn't just because I was stoned when I saw the movie! I remember the sound of it, that's something we owe so much to George Lucas for, sounds that could match the visuals. I saw it up in San Francisco, where Lucas had personally gone to the theater to make sure that it was the absolute perfect viewing experience, and it was. Now, we take all that stuff for granted.
Carrie Fisher
It's a fairy tale and we don't have any modern-day tales.
Ru Paul
Well, I tell you, this past weekend I saw Star Wars for the very first time and I LOVED it so much. I am a Star Wars freak now. 1977 was a media blackout for me and I never saw any of the sequels. And what I loved most about it was the Force, because it really is the essence of what we are. I really believe in the Force.

Michelle Pfeiffer

You know, I never saw it!
